The test is graded on a scale of 1 to 10, with 6.5 being the industry standard for medium firmness. Because everyone senses firmness differently depending on their body type, tastes, and other factors, this range is rather subjective. The figures below reflect how the mattresses feel to me, but you may have a different experience.
Helix
The Helix is available in a number of firmness levels ranging from 5.5 to 7.5 out of ten. I gave the Midnight a 6 out of 10 rating. Side sleepers and back sleepers who like a gentler sensation should choose this hardness level.
The Midnight is also a great bed for people who sleep on their backs and sides. It has enough bounce to allow for simple changeover between positions, and its medium-firm feel is pleasant in both. Its medium-firm texture also makes it an excellent choice for couples who like varied sleeping positions. Because of its low motion transfer and robust edge support, I think it’s also good for couples.
To ensure their hips don’t sink too far into the mattress and their spine stays upright, stomach sleepers should choose for one of the firmer Helix models. These versions may have slightly varied constructions in addition to their different firmnesses. The Dawn, for example, has a latex-like dynamic foam layer, whilst the Midnight has a substantial layer of memory foam. The varied materials can have a different feel.
Purple
I gave the flagship Purple a 7 out of 10 rating, which is somewhat stiffer than medium-firm. The mattress has a medium-firm feel and provides a good balance of support and pressure reduction. Meanwhile, the gel grid accommodates a variety of sleeping postures well.
I have the impression that my weight is evenly dispersed when I’m resting on my back on the Purple. My hips sink in somewhat but not too deeply, providing a wonderful combination of comfort and support. It’s simple to shift to my side, where the grid walls collapse to relieve pressure where it’s needed around my shoulder. Still, I’m not sure I’d want to sleep on my side all night on this mattress; if you’re a firm side sleeper, you might want to look for something softer. However, combination sleepers who only sleep on their sides for portion of the night should be fine. The Purple did a good job of supporting my hips on my stomach. I believe the support will be enough if you spend part of the night here as a combo sleeper. If you sleep on your stomach, though, you’ll want a mattress with much more firm support.
