To put it mildly, things got off to a bad start. My bed came in three separate boxes, each weighing in at over 50 pounds: one for the headboard, and two for the actual bed frame. I opened the boxes on the first floor and carefully carried each piece up the two flights of stairs. The bed’s top, bottom, and side rails all interlock with one another by sliding a tooth into a slot (can you tell I’m not a carpenter? ), but when I went to put up the frame, I discovered I was missing a crucial component. One side rail had teeth where the slots should be and slots where the teeth could be, making it difficult to attach to the top and bottom pieces.
The replacement item I ordered from Burrow on a Saturday night was delivered to my door on Friday. A cinch to put together after I found the necessary parts; the Japanese-style joinery fits snugly. If the majority of buyers are anything like me, they’ll be thrilled with their new item. Not much effort was put into the bed’s design. There are no flashy design elements or bright accents on the subdued headboard. A statement piece it is not. Happily, the bed was delivered to my door with white-glove service, so all I had to do was make room for it and find a new home for my old box spring. The bed was delivered in three boxes, all of which could be carried by the freight elevator in my building in a single trip. As I need to remain in good standing with the co-op board, I was required to obtain a certificate of insurance prior to making the delivery. Assembling my bed only took the movers half an hour from the time they unpacked the boxes in my hallway to the time they left my room. Without my even having to ask, the delivery staff took away all the boxes. Hopefully I won’t need to disassemble the bed any time soon, but if I do, the headboard, side rails, and end rails all come apart using a regular Allen key. When moving, wooden slats can be left in place or removed.

The bed is quite cozy, the sheets are simple to rearrange each morning, and I adore how the upholstered style diffuses light and sounds around the room. There are no rips or sags in the upholstery (at least not where I slept), and the coloration varies ever so slightly, giving the piece a sense of depth (I slept on the Stone fabric, but bouclé is also an option).

I credit the fact that the box was so cumbersome to the fact that the bed frame is constructed of high-quality wood and required only mild coaxing to be reassembled and moved into the bedroom. I’m not going to pretend that putting it together was a breeze; my dad and I put in an afternoon doing it, and that was after making a few mistakes and getting the hang of the Zinus system (more on that later). While Zinus states that assembly should only take an hour, we found the process to be much more time consuming. This is likely due to the lack of on-site assembly or white glove options, which are outside of the company’s pricing range of $350.
Even though there were a lot of parts within the box, the directions were straightforward (again, after a few false starts), and everything was labeled and numbered in a sensible order (piece two connects to piece three and so on). Putting together a Zinus product is a breeze because the company supplies everything from tools to nuts and bolts.
