FAQ
Are 100% cotton sheets the best?
Pure cotton sheets are the most comfortable and breathable option, but not all cotton is created equal. Long-staple cotton, such as Egyptian or Supima, is your best bet for luxuriously soft and long-lasting sheets.
What are the coolest cotton sheets to sleep in?
Cotton percale is cool and breezy, making it ideal for those with a tendency to overheat easily. Sheets made of a cotton percale base combined with a moisture-wicking fabric like Tencel or bamboo are a great option for hot sleepers.
How often should you wash cotton sheets?
Cleaning your sheets once a week will help keep dust mites and allergens at bay. Bacteria can be kept at bay by avoiding the introduction of food, liquids, and pets to the bedroom.
Consumer Report
You can only get so much rest in a cool, dark, quiet room with a good mattress and worn, scratchy sheets. In fact, if you aren’t using the right sheets, you could be spending hours tossing and turning instead of getting a restful night’s sleep. But how can one be sure that the sheets they are purchasing are of high quality? It’s not easy, and we’ve learned the hard way that you can’t just go by marketing terms like “thread count” to determine the quality of a sheet. Though all the sheets we examined were made of cotton, our findings highlight notable variations in durability and quality across manufacturers. Unfortunately, the average queen-sized cotton sheet only lasts through about a year of washings before it no longer even covers a 1-inch mattress, let alone a 12-and-a-half-inch one. Some sheets are so pricey that we recommend waiting for a sale before making a purchase.
How Consumer Reports Tests Sheets
You can tell the quality of a sheet set by how well they fit, how soft they are, and how easily they wrinkle. Good sheets should last, so we check them for durability factors like strength and shrinkage. The other qualities of a fitted sheet don’t matter if it doesn’t fit over your mattress, regardless of how soft it is. The depth of a queen mattress was initially accommodated by all of the tested sheets. When we test for shrinkage, we wash a set of fitted sheets 25 times according to the manufacturer’s instructions, which is roughly a year’s worth of laundering if you wash your sheets every other week. After each wash, we check how well the sheet fits and tucks under mattresses that are 8, 10, 14, and 18 inches deep. Each wash cycle ends with a comparison of the sheets to a standard set of wrinkled sheets. Wrinkled sheets make a bed look sloppy and may even be uncomfortable to lie on. Our engineers use a machine that clamps the sheet sample at both ends and pulls with increasing force until it tears to determine the fibers’ strength. None of the ones we tested were inadequate to cause concern in typical situations. The sheets’ softness is evaluated by a panel of sensory testers who use a standard of fabric samples representing varying degrees of softness as a reference.
What to Look for When Buying Sheets
Can you tell if a cotton sheet is of high quality just by looking at it? Many different factors, such as the weave and the type of cotton fiber, contribute to the feel and durability of cotton sheets, despite the fact that consumers hear a lot about thread count. Take into account the following. Rich in cotton versus pure cotton: There is less than 100% cotton in “cotton-rich” sheets. A minimum of 50% cotton was used in the production of this sheet, with the remainder being made up of other fibers, as stated on the label. Thread count refers to the total number of threads per square inch (both vertically and horizontally). Thread counts from 280 to 1,000 are claimed for the products we evaluate. To achieve a thread count higher than 400, finer/silker yarns like Pima or Egyptian cotton are used. But our investigation shows that thread count isn’t always a reliable quality indicator. The L.L.Bean Pima Cotton Percale is one of the best sheets we tested, and despite having a low thread count of 280, we found them to be exceptionally comfortable and durable. They’re also quite durable, lasting through a year’s worth of washing without losing their shape or compromising their ability to cover mattresses up to 14 inches high. The difference between percale and sateen lies in the weave of the cotton threads used to create the fabrics. The “one-over, one-under” weave is typical of percale sheets. Because of this, it has a smooth, matte finish and a crisp, clean texture. The horizontal threads in sateen sheets first go over several of the vertical threads, and then they loop under and over again. The result is a sheet that drapes better, is softer to the touch, and has a slight sheen that some may find luxurious. However, the best sheet is the one you actually want to sleep on. Cotton fiber varieties: There are various types of cotton staple fibers. There are various lengths of staples available, from short to long to extra-long. Cotton sheets are made from short-staple cotton, which is typically Upland cotton. Those crafted from long- or extra-long-staple cotton typically advertise their origin: Among the many varieties of extra-long-staple cotton, Pima and Egyptian cottons are particularly well-liked; the American Pima variety is marketed under the Supima trademark. Long-fiber cottons are typically more comfortable to wear, more durable, and less prone to pilling. A product may be labeled as 100% cotton when in fact it contains a blend of cotton fibers from different species.
How to Buy the Correct Size Sheets
The height of your mattress should be measured before you go shopping; if you use a mattress topper, add that to the height of your mattress. Although it is recommended that you purchase sheets with a deeper pocket than the thickness of your mattress, this is not a guarantee that they will remain in a usable condition after numerous washes. In our tests, we observed a maximum 6-percent reduction in size for the cotton sheets. There is so much shrinkage in nearly half the samples that the sheet no longer fits the mattress. While many claim to fit mattresses up to 18 inches deep, our testing revealed that only one cotton sheet actually did so. Keep your receipt as a reminder. To get rid of any finishes or excess dye, wash your sheets before using them. In the event that the fitted sheet shrinks to the point where it no longer fits your mattress, or if you simply decide you don’t like the way the sheets feel after washing, please return them.
The Truth About Eco-Friendly Sheets
Growing organic cotton and conventional cotton use very similar methods, at least from a sustainability perspective, which belies the widespread belief that they are fundamentally different. “The big differences come down to where the seeds come from, and which chemicals are used to grow and protect the crops,” says Kavita Mathur, a professor at North Carolina State University’s Wilson College of Textiles in Raleigh. Both organic and conventional cotton can have smaller effects on the environment if they are grown in a sustainable manner. She also claims that it is typically impossible to tell the difference between sheets made from conventionally grown cotton and those made from organically grown cotton. It’s impossible to tell them apart, she says. Moreover, “all cotton, regardless of production methods, is biodegradable, microplastic-free, and carbon-capturing.” Toxic chemicals (like formaldehyde and harmful dyes) are tested for in order to ensure that an Oeko-Tex certified textile product is safe for human health. This includes not only the cotton but also the threads, buttons, and any other components. Contrary to popular belief, bamboo sheets are not particularly eco-friendly. The FTC has even mandated that stores remove all labels and advertisements describing rayon fabrics as “bamboo.” The processed plant fiber is known as rayon. (It is possible to find this fiber under the name bamboo viscose, but both names refer to the same thing.) There are also harmful air pollutants released during production due to the use of toxic chemicals in the processing.
