Tuft & Needle and Casper, two of the most popular online mattress brands, are disruptors of the traditional mattress market. Many people prefer to buy a mattress online rather than in person, and these companies have been at the forefront of this movement.
A low-cost, all-foam mattress was the starting point for each company’s humble beginnings. Tuft & Needle and Casper expanded their product lines to include pillows, bedding, and bedroom furniture as their sales and reputations grew.

Sizing Options
When shopping for a new mattress, don’t forget to take the following factors into account. There are a number of factors to consider while purchasing a mattress, such as its weight, height, and size.
Lifting and moving a bulky mattress can be a pain. People who know they’ll be moving a lot during the mattress’ useful life should take this into account when making a purchase.
There are two main reasons to be tall. If you have a tall mattress, you might need fitted sheets with extra-deep pockets to keep them from shifting around. When it comes to getting into and out of bed, it’s important to consider the entire height of the bed, which includes the mattress and the frame. For persons with creaky joints, this may be a significant concern.

All models are available in the six common mattress sizes: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king. Size choices are available for all models.
Construction and Materials Comparison
Each mattress’ performance is heavily influenced by the design of its layers and the materials that go into each one.
The support core and the comfort system make up the interior of a mattress, which is divided into two sections. The mattress’s bottom section, referred to as the support core, is responsible for the mattress’ overall structural integrity. As a foundation for the comfort system, it helps to give it a certain feel.
Comfort systems include the mattress’s top layer or layers and have a significant impact on the bed’s performance. Multiple materials and layers can be used. Foam, latex, micro-coils, and cotton and wool fibers, among others, are frequently used in the construction of these layers.
When evaluating the Tuft & Needle vs. Casper beds, it’s critical to look at every aspect of their construction, starting with their comfort layer all the way down to the support core.
Tuft & Needle
Components of all Tuft & Needle mattresses are the same. The cover, which is comprised of polyester and micro-polyamide, provides a breathable and velvety surface for the Original, Mint, and Hybrid.
In addition to the company’s unique Adaptive Foam, all Tuft & Needle mattresses include this second component: Memory foam and latex characteristics are combined in a novel polyfoam formulation called Adaptive Foam.
Adaptive Foam’s mild conforming properties allow it to provide additional cushioning to heavier portions of the body, making it ideal for relieving pressure points. Additionally, its responsiveness is above average, making it easy to navigate on top of it. To counteract the buildup of heat, the gel-infused foam does not soften as it gets warmer.
Original Tuft & Needle
Simply put, it’s one of the most straightforward mattress designs out there.
- An adaptive foam layer of 3 inches.
- Seven inches of HDPE foam.
With its medium firmness and wide appeal, the Original offers ample of support and comfort for the majority of sleepers despite its simple design.
Tuft & Needle Mint
The Mint is Tuft & Needle’s answer to the success of the Original, which adds just one layer to the design:
- An adaptive foam layer of 3 inches.
- Adaptive Foam 2 inches thick.
- Seven inches of HDPE foam.
People who weigh more over 230 pounds can benefit from the Mint’s two-inch thicker comfort system, which delivers more reliable pressure relief and durability. To avoid sinking too far into the mattress, this extra-thick comfort system is included. In order to protect the Mint Mattress from hazardous microorganisms, the mattress’s cover is coated with an antimicrobial protectant.
Tuft & Needle Hybrid
Construction of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid is unconventional:
- Foam that adapts to the wearer’s needs.
- Micro-coils.
- Polyfoam transition.
- Innerspring coils encased in a sleeve
The multiple layers of coils in the Hybrid give it a slightly softer feel than an all-foam mattress, but it’s still more responsive than a traditional mattress. The Hybrid’s coils help it maintain a comfortable interior temperature throughout the night. As a result of the additional coil layers, the Hybrid offers better edge support than the Original and Mint.
It’s possible to learn about the materials used in Tuft & Needle’s mattresses, but they don’t go into great detail. To see this in action is especially apparent while reviewing the Hybrid, as the thickness of each layer is not publicly available. Customer reviews can provide valuable information about a mattress’s performance despite the lack of information regarding its manufacture.
Casper
There are five different mattresses in Casper’s product line.
The Casper Original and Casper Hybrid
There is a distinct difference between the Casper Original and Casper Hybrid mattresses in terms of their comfort systems.
The following is a breakdown of the Casper Original’s layers:
- 1 5/8 in. thick polyfoam board
- Memory foam zoned at 2 inches thick
- Polyfoam blocks that are 7 inches thick.
Read more : AmeriSleep vs. Tempur-Pedic Mattress Comparison
The Casper Hybrid is made up of the following parts:
- Polyfoam that is 1.5 inches thick.
- a layer of zoned memory foam that is approximately 2 inches thick
- Foam encasement of 6 inches of coils and 7 inches of foam
Two distinct foams are used in the comfort system to create significant contouring without sacrificing responsiveness for Casper and Casper Hybrid mattresses. Thus, these mattresses offer superior pressure relief and motion isolation. The edge support and springiness of the Hybrid are both improved.
The Casper Element
The Casper Element is Casper’s entry-level product. This is a basic mattress with no extras:
- Ventilated polyfoam is 3 inches thick.
- 6.5 inches of polyurethane foam.
A layer of foam in the Element’s comfort layer provides pressure relief, but it lacks the zonal foam featured in other Casper mattresses. It’s a good deal for folks on a low budget because it’s a basic mattress.
Casper Wave Hybrid
These are the parts of the Wave Hybrid:
- Polyfoam 1 inch thick.
- Ventilated latex of 1.5 inches thick.
- Memory foam with distinct zones, measuring 1.5 inches thick.
- Zoned polyfoam with built-in gel pods is 1.5 inches thick.
- Coils are encased in a 7-inch foam sleeve that measures 6 inches in diameter.
An unique method to product development is used to create the Wave Hybrid’s durable design. The gel pod layer is the newest addition. Zoned support is provided by these pods, which allow the mattress to better accommodate any unique sleeper. Motion isolation, bounce, and pressure relief are all enhanced by the inclusion of latex-like polyfoam, latex, and memory foam on top of the gel-pod layer.
The Wave Hybrid is able to keep the mattress cool despite its pronounced contouring because to its ability to resist considerable heat buildup. It’s a good fit for most persons under 130 pounds and most side sleepers because it has a medium feel.
Casper Nova Hybrid
The following components are included in the Nova Hybrid:.
- Polyfoam adaptable to a thickness of one inch.
- Polyurethane foam zoned at 1.5″.
- Memory foam cut to a 2-inch shape.
- A 7-inch polyfoam box houses coils 6 inches in diameter.
The Nova Hybrid, Casper’s softest mattress, with excellent contouring for a hybrid. Casper’s softest mattress. Top polyfoam layer adapts to body shape; second polyfoam layer is separated into three firmness zones to provide additional support where it’s needed and gentle cradling for lighter portions of the body. Other advantages include a more than average level of motion isolation for couples and a constant interior airflow that ensures temperature neutrality. The Nova Hybrid is a great option for those who like a softer mattress feel.
Average Customer Ratings
Check through user reviews to get an idea of how well a mattress performs. You can get a sense of whether you’ll be happy with a mattress based on the experiences of other buyers. However, bear the following questions in mind while reading reviews:
- Who is the reviewer? It’s best to get evaluations from actual consumers rather than people who received a mattress for free or were rewarded for their review.
- How many reviews are there? More evaluations in a wider sample means you can be sure the ratings aren’t skewed by outliers, whether they’re good or negative.
- What’s the review score? On a scale of one to five, the actual rating provides a useful picture of consumer satisfaction.
- What do the reviews actually say? If you’re simply looking at the rating, you’re missing out on a lot of information. You can see if the evaluations are fair and whether the advantages and negatives expressed are relevant to your position and priorities by looking at the number of reviews.

In-Depth Ratings
Mattresses appear to be interchangeable from a distance. When you take a closer look, though, the variations in build, features and performance become clear. Here, we’ll go over the most important factors that influence consumer happiness with mattresses so that you may decide what’s most important to you and evaluate different mattress models side by side.
- Durability: Mattresses take a lot of abuse, what with supporting the body for so many hours each night. Pressure relief, bounce, and comfort can all be negatively affected by a mattress that is inadequately designed under these conditions. In addition, the better your return on investment, the longer the mattress lasts. Solidly constructed mattresses can work well for several years longer than the typical five-year lifespan of a mattress.
- Motion Isolation: Many people know all too well how one person’s tossing and turning may disturb the other. By reducing the amount of movement that can be conveyed from one section of the mattress to another, motion isolation helps to prevent these disturbances. When it comes to motion isolation, memory foam tops the list, although polyfoams and latex aren’t far behind.
- Sex: A mattress that responds well to sexual activity should be your first choice. Having a responsive mattress makes it easy to get up and down from the bed in a matter of seconds. In terms of responsiveness, latex and hybrid mattresses are the most common. When pressure is removed from a plush mattress, it might impede sex since it takes time for the mattress to return.
- Temperature Neutrality: Overheating can be a problem with some mattresses. This is most commonly caused by the tightness of the garment, which restricts airflow and causes the body to overheat. Additionally, some materials, such as memory foam, are more susceptible to overheating. Heat retention and improved airflow around and through the mattress layers are common features of many mattress manufacturers.
- Pressure Relief: The body’s shape and weight distribution determine the amount of support it needs. The lower back, abdomen, and shoulders, which bear the brunt of the body’s weight and are therefore more vulnerable to injury, often benefit from additional padding. To avoid aches and pains, a mattress should be able to accommodate certain pressure areas. Pressure relief and improved spinal alignment can be achieved with mattresses that have some degree of contouring.
- Off-gassing: When a mattress is first installed in your bedroom, it may emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that were formed during the manufacturing process. This isn’t harmful to your health, but it does have a distinct smell. If you’re extremely sensitive to smell, you may find this stench to be unbearable after just a few hours, but it’s usually gone after a few days.
- Ease of Movement: In spite of the fact that many individuals prefer a soft feel, they do not want to sleep in quicksand. Unfortunately, this can be caused by a mattress that has too much sink and not enough suppleness. Combination sleepers, who like to switch up their sleeping positions frequently during the night, require a mattress that is both comfortable and easy to move around in.
- Edge Support: Sometimes, it feels as if you’re going to roll out of or be ejected from the bed because of the mattress’s perimeter. Mattresses that are too soft or lack responsiveness are more likely to have this problem. People who frequently sleep or sit near the edge of the bed may benefit more from beds that are reinforced along the edge to address this issue.

In-Depth Pricing
It is possible to find a mattress for any pricing point. For buyers who are already perplexed as to why the price of a mattress varies so widely, promotions are plentiful.
As a general rule, consumers rarely pay the full retail price (MSRP) for any given product; instead, there is usually always an offer to lower the final cost.
It’s also important to keep in mind that a higher price doesn’t necessarily mean a superior mattress. The relationship between price and quality isn’t always precisely correlated, as different factors can impact the MSRP of a certain mattress model. The following are examples of these factors:
- The total number of tiers in a structure.
- Layer thickness.
- Each layer’s composition in terms of the materials utilized.
- Checking to see if the mattress is certified (such as for organic production).
- A mattress’s manufacturing location.
- The addition of additional options (for pressure relief, temperature regulation, or other performance elements).
It’s a good thing for consumers that the mattress market is so competitive that amazing deals can be found in nearly any price range.

Tuft & Needle and Casper are good examples of the wide range of mattress costs available online.
In terms of price, the Casper Element and the Tuft & Needle Original are virtually identical. A no-frills, all-foam design distinguishes each of these products as being a good value.
The Casper Original and the Tuft & Needle Mint, two more durable all-foam mattresses with a similar pricing, are available at a higher price point. Both of these 12-inch versions are fantastic buys in terms of price/quality ratio. With a thicker comfort system than inexpensive ones, they offer a more lasting and well-rounded bed.
The Casper Hybrid and Tuft & Needle Hybrid are significantly more expensive than the all-foam alternatives. Costlier Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattresses contain a coil-on-coil design that appeals to those who prefer the feel of innerspring coils..
Luxury mattresses are only available from Casper. Innovative support and temperature control materials are included in the Nova Hybrid and Wave Hybrid, making them more feature-rich. For obvious financial reasons, these mattresses are far more expensive than the budget and value selections from these two manufacturers….
Any option you choose, seek for a promotion or discount since in most circumstances, you may receive a bargain that allows you to spend less than 5% of the list price.
Trials, Warranty and Delivery
The success of firms like Casper and Tuft & Needle has been largely due to their ability to make online mattress shopping easy for customers. To make this happen, we had to pay close attention to the shipping, return, and warranty operations.
To help you get started, we’ve outlined the practicalities of online mattress purchases and what to expect from these two industry leaders.
Shipping
Mattress-in-a-box shipping or White Glove delivery are the two options available when purchasing a mattress online.
Mattress-in-a-Box Shipping
In the internet mattress sector, mattress-in-a-box shipping has proven instrumental. FedEx or UPS ground services are used to ship compressed mattresses encased in plastic. Once you remove the package and carry the mattress to your bedroom, the mattress decompresses to its full size.
This is the most common shipping method for internet mattresses, and it’s usually free. Within a few days of placing an order, the delivery should arrive. Shoppers should be advised that two individuals are normally needed to move the mattress box and assemble the mattress.
The delivery of all Tuft & Needle’s mattresses is free of charge. A fee is charged for expedited mattress-in-a-box shipping.
The Casper Original, Hybrid, and Element mattresses are all eligible for free standard shipping from Casper. For a price, some establishments provide expedited shipping, such as same-day delivery. White Glove delivery is included in the price of the Wave Hybrid.
White Glove Delivery
Mattress installation is included in the White Glove delivery service. In your bedroom, a staff puts up the mattress for you. The service normally includes the removal of your old mattress after they are done.
Wave Hybrid mattresses in king and California king sizes are delivered free of charge by Casper. The Wave Hybrid and other Casper mattresses, in various sizes, can have this feature added for an additional cost.
For an additional fee, Tuft & Needle offers White Glove delivery.

Shipping Outside the Contiguous United States
Outside of the 48 contiguous states, such as Alaska and Hawaii, shipping policies may differ. White Glove delivery, for example, may not be an option if delivery is not accessible. It is not uncommon for additional charges to be incurred.
There are no White Glove delivery options for Casper or Tuft & Needle in Alaska or Hawaii or some overseas destinations. Depending on where you want your order shipped, you may be charged an additional fee during the checkout process.
Returns
Most online mattress retailers have a far more accommodating return policy than traditional brick-and-mortar retailers. A sleep trial is a return policy that allows you to try out a mattress for a set amount of time and then get a refund if it doesn’t meet your expectations.
The majority of customers believe that a sleep trial is a significantly better way to determine the suitability of a mattress than simply spending a few minutes on one in a showroom. The return process is usually made simple and uncomplicated by online retailers.
It’s easy to exchange or refund your Casper or Tuft & Needle mattress. A 100-night trial is available, and you are not required to keep the mattress for any particular amount of nights. To return a mattress, these companies will work with you to arrange pickup or donation, and there is no shipping or restocking cost associated with the return.
Warranties
Mattress warranties are nearly always included in the purchase price of the mattress. A warranty covers material and workmanship problems.
Most mattress warranties don’t cover normal wear-and-tear or accidental damage. Instead, they prevent the product from breaking down in an abnormally severe or extreme manner. As a condition of the warranty, the mattress must be used on a specific model of bed frame.
A warranty will define a remedy if there is a problem with the product. If a mattress is defective, then the company has the option to either fix or replace it. Depending on how long they’ve had the bed, the client is responsible for a portion of the repair or replacement charges. For a non-prorated warranty, the coverage remains the same during the whole warranty period.
In the unlikely event of a mattress defect, consumers of Tuft & Needle and Casper can rely on a 10-year guarantee that is non-prorated and friendly to them.
Firmness And Feel Differences
The stiffness variations between the Casper and Tuft and Needle have already been mentioned. Casper and Tuft and Needle mattresses will now be discussed in further detail, including their firmness and how they feel to sleep on.
How Firm Are The Casper And Tuft And Needle Mattresses?
A firmness rating of 7/10, which is only a tad above average, is what we found with the Casper. Again, the Casper’s zonal design merits reiteration. As a result, people who sleep on their backs or stomachs will find the Casper to be firmer and more supportive, while those who sleep on their sides will find it to be more pressure-relieving.
The stiffness of the Tuft and Needle was roughly a 6.5/10 for us. With the stiffer support layer, Adaptive Foam has a medium-firmness top layer that isn’t overly soft.
The firmness of both the Casper and Tuft and Needle mattresses is highly dependent on the size and weight of the individual using them.
Larger people may think these mattresses are firmer because they press in more, while lighter people may think they are softer because they don’t press in as far.
Sleeping On The Casper And Tuft And Needle Mattresses
The Casper mattress, which we’ve been using for back sleep, seems like a good fit. We are supported by a polyfoam layer on top of a foundation foam layer that conforms to our shape. In addition, we can feel the Zoned Support layer pressing up into our lumbar area and providing support there.
As far as side sleepers are concerned, the Casper is a good option because it places minimal strain on the shoulders and hips. Our shoulders benefit from the mattress’s zoning because it is softer there.
We don’t feel like our hips sink in too far while sleeping on the Casper. We’re getting a lot of assistance from the firmer center zone, which helps us stay in line.
Compared to Casper, the Tuft and Needle is less supportive when it comes to sleeping on one’s back. There is a lack of zonal construction and lumbar support, which we would like to see in the Casper.
The Adaptive Foam layer provides superb pressure relief for our shoulders and hips as we sleep on our side. As we’ll see in the following section, this may not be the case for larger individuals.
When we slept on our stomachs, the Tuft and Needle mattress was not supportive enough and our hips bowed slightly into the mattress. When we sleep in this posture, we require a firmer mattress that is more supporting.
What Do The Casper And Tuft And Needle Mattresses Feel Like?
A responsive foam feel is present in both the Casper and Tuft and Needle. It’s hard to see from the pictures, but there’s plenty of spring to the Tuft and Needle’s polyfoam and Adaptive Foam. Both the Casper and Tuft and Needle may be moved and repositioned with ease thanks to this feature.
Zoned Support is a big difference between Casper and Tuft and Needle. In comparison to the Casper, the Tuft and Needle mattress has a more consistent firmness and feel, regardless of a person’s sleeping position.
You can also compare Amerisleep vs. Tuft & Needle in our responsive mattress comparison.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs
Back sleepers of average weight will find that the Casper mattress provides better lumbar support and prefer to sleep on their backs. For side sleepers of medium weight, either mattress should provide the pressure reduction they require. The Casper mattress is best for stomach sleepers and those of average weight.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs
The Casper mattress is best for larger sleepers in all three positions. On the Tuft and Needle, they won’t have adequate support for back sleepers, but on the Casper, this shouldn’t be a concern. The Casper Wave Hybrid or Nova Hybrid may still be a good option for larger back sleepers, though.
For those who prefer to sleep on their sides, both of the mattresses are going to be a real challenge for them. If they are looking for a mattress with a thicker comfort layer, they’ll want to go for one with a firmer base.
Larger people who sleep on their stomachs will find the Casper mattress to be more supporting, but they would probably prefer a firmer, more supportive mattress. Large stomach sleepers may find the Casper lacking in support, despite its zoned design.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs
Both mattresses should be suitable for light sleepers. Both mattresses will provide enough support for back and side sleepers, respectively. The Casper mattress is superior for stomach sleeping, but the Tuft and Needle mattress should still provide adequate support for lighter stomach sleepers.
To save money, light sleepers can choose the Tuft and Needle over the Casper, which is a more streamlined, value alternative.
